Welcome to this Sunday’s Third Degree: Tough, Brief, Weekly Interrogations on matters public and private that force thinking and response. Today we target: SA

  • Why do a 14th century dice game (sixes and sevens bad news) and fighter pilot Situation Awareness (SA) matter today?
  • Does the idiom, indicating total confusion and disarray, read FUBAR if you choose, describe multiple, contemporary goings-on and require a God’s eye view or, at minimum, sardonic observation, to have SA– knowing what’s going on around us?
  • Since good SA identifies and locates bogies (unknowns), bandits (enemies) and friendlies too, how do you really sort out the good guys from the bad ones?
  • Is it a target rich environment?
  • So, what are your sources of information? How objective? How trustworthy?
  • What shows up on your personal radar or in your field of view?
  • How crucial is the information provided by others in your formation, especially your wingman or woman?
  • Given information overload and sorting difficulty, are there rules of engagement that apply?
  • What are those rules? Who makes them? Who follows them?
  • What measures of merit dominate?
  • Are estimations of integrity, competence, fairness and freedom of movement essential?
  • Unlike expression of opinion, beware if portrayed as fact or news, should betrayed truth and common sense denied, especially for political or economic advantage/cover up, be offensive and disqualifying?
  • When a fixed and advertised six becomes a ‘sorta’ seven and a weather wink and nod engender favor, much less outright lying, is outrage justified?
  • If Gertrude Stein’s “a rose is a rose ” is really of many varieties and coloration, so too, do promise and performance provide a bouquet to see and sniff or to impale?
  • Is fairness imperiled, when justice, a seven-letter word foundational to our Republic, is shaved to six and the missing “e” stands for “endangered”? How recognized? How corrected?
  • Lastly, does unhindered personal and societal mobility provide for options that have and will support American growth and prosperity? Is abundant energy, personal and produced, required?
  • With so many domestic and international bogies and bandits around and, hopefully, even more friendlies, is SA task one?
  • So, best to keep your head on a swivel, evaluate the sixes and sevens situations but watch out if you get your fangs out because you’ll be so busy trying to kill, you’ll lose SA, likely die, and, so will we?
